New Book about September 11
Sunday September 7, 2003
For many us, this is a distressing time of year as the second anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks approaches. It is a difficult subject and one that is hard to explain to children. On the one hand, we want them to know what happened and how awful it was; on the other hand, we don't want them to be overwhelmed by the horror of it all. A new book for children 11 and older sensitively presents the story of September 11, 2001: Attack on New York City. The author, Wilborn Hampton, uses many black and white photographs, some very sad, to illustrate the history of the attacks.
Hampton lives in New York City where he works as an editor for the New York Times. He has a background as a reporter and author of nonfiction books for adults. In the book, he describes his own experiences and those of several of the people who were trapped in one of the Twin Towers or waiting at home for word of a loved one who worked there. He also focuses on a company of firefighters, a volunteer, and the mayor of New York City.
