Recommended Feminist Books for Youth

Monday September 29, 2003
If you are looking for children’s books that feature strong female characters, you’ll be interested in my article on the Amelia Bloomer Project. The Project was developed by the Feminist Task Force of the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table. According to the Task Force, "In the midst of growing political and social conservatism, courageous authors, illustrators, editors, and publishers continue to create risk-taking and life-changing books about girls and women." Since 2002, to honor those who create such books, the Task Force has published an annual bibliography of recommended feminist books for youth.

After you read the article and check out the 2002 and 2002 booklists, let me know what you think. Are there any books on the lists that you would (or would not) recommend? Join the discussion on the About Children's Books Forum. recall recall
