Are they kidding?

Friday October 10, 2003
When I first read the BBC News article "Publishers fight for more 'male lit,'" I found some of the comments in it so outrageous that I thought it might be a joke. However, since it's not April's Fool Day, I have to suppose it's true. According to publisher David Elliott, "Because of feminism and political correctness, what young men read now is crap these days..." He and publisher Brad Thompson will publish boys' books under the title Young Spitfire and adult books under the title Spitfire. According to the article, "Spitfire wants a return to adventure stories where men are men and debauchery is welcomed along with smoking and drinking."

When I was putting my directory of Books for Boys/Books for Girls together, I certainly found lots of good books. However, based on Elliott's and Thompson's criteria, they probably wouldn't measure up. What do you think? Read the article, then join the discussion by posting your comments on the About Children's Books Forum.recall recall
