Concrete Poetry: A Poke in the I

Monday November 3, 2003
One of my favorite books of concrete poetry is A Poke in the I, which was illustrated by Chris Raschka. In case you are not familiar with them, concrete poems can be one-word poems or poems with a number of words, but in every case, the words are arranged into a particular shape that reflects the poem's meaning.

I was reminded of the book tonight when I was cruising the Internet and came across an essay by Chris Raschka on the Children's Book Council website, a wonderful resource. In the essay, Raschka talks about "one of the watershed—I believe that is the term—moments of my artistic upbringing." The essay is just one of a number of first person accounts by authors and illustrators available on the CBC site.

Do you share poetry with your children? If so, what kind? Vote in our poll on the About Children's Books Forum.recall recall
