Martin Luther King Day

Monday January 19, 2004
It seems appropriate on Martin Luther King Day to highlight some of the best children's books about African American freedom fighters. Among the books on my Top Picks list are Martin's Big Words, a wonderful, oversize picture book biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. that was written by Doreen Rappaport and has dramatic and moving cut paper collage and watercolor artwork by Bryan Collier; and I Have a Dream, which contains the text of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s eloquent 1963 "I have a dream" speech, along with artwork by fifteen Coretta Scott King Award- and Honor Book- winning illustrators. The other books on the list are Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters, Through My Eyes, and Ida B. Wells, Mother of the Civil Rights Movement.

If you have other books to recommend for Martin Luther King Day or another holiday, please post a message on the About Children's Books Forum.recall recall
