A New Resource: German Children's Books

Sunday February 8, 2004
While many books written in English and other languages are translated into German for sales in Germany, very few books written in German are translated into other languages for sales in other countries. In an effort to rectify this, a new website, Litrix.de/German Literature Online, has been established. Acording to the site introduction, "Litrix.de is a project initiated by the Federal Cultural Foundation and supported by the Goethe-Institut with the aim of promoting an appreciation of contemporary German literature and its translation." The site has three versions: English, German, and Arabic.

In the Books for Children and Young People section, you will find cover art and summaries of several recently published books. It's fun to read about children's books from other countries. Hopefully, as a result of this website, more translations of German children's books will become readily available for the enjoyment of children around the world.

Do your children ever read books that were originally published in languages other than English? Of course they do if they have ever read a Hans Christian Andersen or Grimm's fairy tale. But what about translations of books that were written recently? Do you have any to recommend? Are there authors from countries other than the United States who write in English that you'd recommend or translations your children have particularly enjoyed? Join our discussion on the About Children's Books Forum. recall recall
