Jean Little and Other Canadian Authors
Tuesday February 17, 2004
One of my favorite children's authors is Jean Little, who is internationally known for both her novels and her books for beginning readers. Although it was published fifteen years ago, her first poetry collection, "Hey, World, Here I Am!," remains popular. Now, Jean Little has a new book of poems. The theme of "I Gave My Mom a Castle" is giving and receiving.
As her publisher says, "Most are prose poems, mini stories told by a wide cast of characters from toddlers to teens with an adult or two thrown in for good measure....She writes about being a foster child, being ignored or controlled by a parent, being the eldest, being the youngest, being hurt - or helped - by a teacher, teacher a parrot to speak, all with love, humor and depth of perception." The poems range from humorous to touching, but all are appealing. I think children nine and older will enjoy the poems, as will their parents. Kady MacDonald Denton's sketches complement the 80-page-long book.
If you are interested in learning more about Canadian children's books and their creators, I recommend you visit the website of the Canadian Children's Book Centre. The goal of the nonprofit organization is "to promote, support and encourage the reading, writing and illustrating of Canadian books for children and teens."
While I have some Canadian authors in my Authors/Artists Subjects directory, I am always eager for more. Author Nikki Tate responded to my request with a long list of Canadian authors. recall recall
