Easter and Passover Books and More
Friday April 2, 2004
The March 30th online edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has an intriguing article, "Good books to curl up with as April showers fall," by Sarah Bryan Miller.
The article contains summaries of a number of recommended children's books that fall into these categories: Books for Passover, Books for Easter, Books for Christians and Jews, Chickies and Bunnies and Lambs, Oh My!, and Two New Classics: Just Great Children's Books.
One of the books that Miller considers to be a "New" classic is "La La Rose," by Satomi Ichikawa, which she recommends for ages 4 and up. According to Miller, "This is a beautiful book, its story and pictures perfectly complementing each other, telling a tale that will resonate with anyone who ever had an inseparable stuffed friend." About the other "New" classic Miller says, "Billie Holiday's classic song is the starting point for 'God Bless the Child'... here transformed into the evocative tale of a black Southern family's migration to Chicago in the 1930s..... This winning volume is short on words but big on feeling; it comes with a CD of Holiday's 1941 recording." Jerry Pinkney, one of my favorite children's book artists, illustrated the book.
For more spring holiday books, see my Easter Top Picks and my review of "Wonders and Miracles: A Passover Companion," which Miller also recommends in her article.
