Library Sites Worth Visiting

Tuesday April 13, 2004
I'm convinced that one of the best gifts you can give your child is a library card and a weekly trip to the library to borrow books. Many public libraries also have wonderful websites. There are 20 Canadian and U.S. public libraries listed in the About Children's Books Libraries Subjects directory.

One of the best children's department public library websites that I have found is that of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It just keeps getting better. The site includes a large number of booklists, both theme-based lists and lists for various age/grade levels. There are lots of quizzes about specific books and special topics, book reviews by kids and staff members, and a special section for teachers.

I also particularly like On-Lion for Kids, the New York Public Library's site. Its Recommended Reading page lists 11 booklists on celebrations and holidays, seven Best Books lists, and numerous Summer Reading lists. It also has links to authors and illustrators, children's literature awards, and children's magazines.

If you know of a good children's library site that you'd recommend I add to my list, let me know by posting a message on the About Children's Books Forum. I would like to add some libraries from the UK, Australian, and other English-speaking countries.
