"Love to Mamá: A Tribute to Mothers"

Wednesday April 21, 2004
If you are looking for a Mother's Day gift, I have a children's books to recommend. It's "Love to Mamá: A Tribute to Mothers." The bright magenta cover with the bright-eyed mother and child hugging in the center says it all. This is a book that celebrates, in pictures and poetry, the bond of love between mothers and their children and grandchildren. The artwork and the poetry by Latino poets speaks to the joy, and occasional poignancy, such bonds create. The book was published by Lee and Low Books in 2001. It is an excellent read aloud for children eight and older. The Spanish glossary at the back is helpful, as many of the poems are exuberantly sprinkled with Spanish words.

Are there other children's books that you particularly like because of their portrayals of mothers and mother love? I have always liked the mother in Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series. I also like the mother in "Kiss Good Night" by Amy Hest. Share your recommendations by posting a message on the About Children's Books Forum.
