Unlike many children's authors who write for a specific age group, Cynthia Rylant writes both award winning picture books and novels for older children. On her website, Rylant writes, "Believe it or not, I didn't really know about children's books until I grew up. Where I lived in West Virginia there wasn't a library nearby, and my school didn't have a library. So I read comic books and Nancy Drew books which I bought myself. (And I read tons of those)." She grew to love children's books while working as a clerk in a library.
Cynthia Rylant has written more than 60 children's books since her first book was published in 1982. Her work has been honored with numerous awards, including a Newbery Medal. While her name may not be familiar to you, you will probably recognize the names of some of her books and/or characters. Her books include: "When I Was Young in the Mountains," "The Relatives Came," "Appalachia: The Voices of Sleeping Birds, and "Missing May." Four to eight year olds love her characters Poppleton, Henry and Mudge, and Mr. Putter and Tabby.
