In all of the publicity about the 50th anniversary of the Brown versus Board of Education decision, I was pleased to learn about a new book compiled by Joyce Carol Thomas. According to a San Francisco Chronicle article by Rona Marech, Chronicle Staff Writer, "'Linda Brown, You Are Not Alone: The Brown vs. Board of Education Decision'" (Hyperion, $15.99) [is] a handsome collection of stories, memoirs, poems and essays aimed at children 10 years and older." The collection is made up of writings by authors of children's books who were themselves children at the time of Brown vs. Board of Education. The authors include Jerry Spinelli, Jean Craighead George, Leona Nicholas Welch, and Quincy Troupe.

If you are looking for some good children's books about African American freedom fighters, check out my Top Picks list. Then, if you have books you think I should add, post a message on the About Children's Books Forum.
