Américas Award Winners

Wednesday June 2, 2004
Are you familiar with the Américas Award? It is sponsored by the national Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP). According to the Center for Latin America and Caribbean Studies,
The Américas Award is given in recognition of U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected non-fiction (from picture books to works for young adults) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States.
The 2003 Américas Award winners are Judith Ortiz Cofer, author of “The Meaning of Consuelo,” which was published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and Illustrator Yuyi Morales, honored for her book “Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book,” which was published by Chronicle Books. For other children's books, see my Hispanic/Latino directory.

Do you share books about other cultures with your children? Vote in my poll on the About Children's Books Forum and add your comments.
