Are Your Kids Ready for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"?
Thursday June 3, 2004
Children and adults have been waiting impatiently for the release of the movie version of JK Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban." The reviews are out, and the movie is getting a lot of praise, with many of the accolades going to the director, Alfonso Cuarón. I have read a lot of the reviews and wanted to share what some of the critics had to say to help you determine if your child will enjoy, or be frightened by, the movie.
Most of the critics are in agreement that this is the best Harry Potter movie yet, more intense and darker than the previous movies. CNN.com describes movie as depicting "...the increasingly sinister world of 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.'" Describing the movie as "...too scary for small kids," The Christian Science Monitor's film critic, David Sterritt, praises the movie, stating, "From its restlessly moving camera work to its heartfelt acting by a splendid cast, 'Azkaban' is a horror movie for mature kids." A.O.Scott, writing in The New York Times, reports, "This is surely the most interesting of the three Potter movies, in part because it is the first one that actually looks and feels like a movie, rather than a staged reading with special effects."
As soon as you see the movie, let me know what you and your children thought of it by posting a message on the About Children's Books Forum. I would also appreciate it if you would post a message with your predictions as to the plot of Harry Potter Book Six.
As always, if you are looking for information about the Harry Potter series, censorship, or recommended books for children who enjoy the Harry Potter books, you'll find it in my Harry Potter Plus directory.
