If you are looking for a good annotated list of multicultural and anti-bias children's books, I recommend the online bibliography from the Anti-Defamation League's A World of Difference Institute. It is divided into six categories: Biography, Cultural & Religious Groups, Customs & Traditions, Families & Friends, Folktales, Legends & Poems, and Prejudice & Discrimination. Each of these categories is further subdivided. The bibliography was developed because of the ADL's belief in the power of multicultural literature as stated below.
"Reading multicultural literature has the potential to foster children's understanding and respect for their own and others' cultural groups, to develop empathy, and, in general, to begin the lifelong process of learning about multiple perspectives and experiences."
For more about multicultural books, see my Multicultural / Bilingual / Culture and Tradition directory. For additional information, see my Tolerance / Racism / Prejudice directory.

If you have a moment, I’d like to introduce you to my new children’s book called The Many Colors of Friendship. Realizing how important it is to give our children tools and the right education about Diversity;Multiculturalism and Racism, I wanted to write something meaningful that children come come away with a positive message. This book means the world to me and I’d like to share it with you. My 7 year old daughter, Katherine, also wanted to help write it and has inspired my life beyond words.

I hope you like it!

Thank you,
Rita Kaye Vetsch
