Banned Books Week: September 25–October 2, 2004

The American Library Association stresses the fact that we should all celebrate our freedom to read, especially during Banned Books Week (September 25–October 2, 2004 ). In its guide for librarians, the ALA reports,
Since 1990, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has recorded more than 7,800 book challenges, including 458 in 2003. A challenge is a formal, written complaint requesting a book be removed from library shelves or school curriculum.
