2004 Jane Addams Children's Book Awards

Friday October 1, 2004
On October 22, the official presentations of the 51st Jane Addams Children’s Book Awards, announced in April, will be made. According to the Jane Addams Peace Association,
The Jane Addams Children's Book Awards are given annually to the children's picture books and longer books published the preceding year that effectively promote the cause of peace, social justice, world community, and the equality of the sexes and all races as well as meeting conventional standards for excellence.
"Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez," written by Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Yuyi Morales, and published by Harcourt Children’s Books, won in the Picture Book category. "Out of Bounds: Seven Stories of Conflict and Hope," which deals with South African apartheid and its aftermath, won in the Books for Older Children category. It was written by Beverley Naidoo and published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.
