In Memory of Tina Schart Hyman
Sunday November 21, 2004
I was sorry to hear through the Child_lit listserv that award winning artist Tina Schart Hyman died yesterday after a long illness. Hyman's "Little Red Riding Hood" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1984. She won the 1985 Caldecott Medal for "Saint George and the Dragon." Her luminous illustrations were always filled with interesting details and greatly complemented the text of the half dozen books she also wrote and the more than 100 children's books she illustrated. My favorite illustrations by Tina Schart Hyman are the watercolors she did for John Updike's "A Child's Calendar." I included the book in my Top Picks: Poetry Books, which includes ten of my favorite poetry books for children.
