“The Polar Express” – We Loved the Movie
Monday December 6, 2004
“The Polar Express” is a family favorite. It’s one of the Top Picks on my Christmas Picture Books list. Having read mixed reviews about the movie, I wanted to judge for myself. I also wanted to get the reactions of a lot of children. When my grandson’s school scheduled a special performance as a family event/fundraiser, I went, along with my daughter, son-in-law, eight-year-old grandson, and four-year-old granddaughter.
Did the movie stick strictly to the plot of the book? No. Did the movie adhere to the spirit of the book? Yes. The special effects were fantastic. Despite the number of young children in the audience, there was none of the usual rustling and talking. The children’s attention was fully focused on the movie. However, the minute it was over, they couldn't stop talking about it. Will the movie ruin the children's book for your child? No. In fact, after the movie, my grandson spoke with great affection about the first time he heard the story of “The Polar Express.”
