Don't Forget "The Tiger Rising"

Wednesday February 16, 2005
With all of the hype about the February 18th release of the movie version of Kate DiCamillo's first children's novel, "Because of Winn-Dixie," and all of the publicity her third children's book, "The Tale of Despereaux," received as a Newbery Medal winner, it's easy to lose sight of her second book. However, "The Tiger Rising," a National Book Award finalist, is also an excellent book. "The Tiger Rising" has a darker tone than "Because of Winn-Dixie," and I recommend it for slightly older children (ten to thirteen year olds). The characters are dealing with some weighty issues: grief, anger, and isolation. Once again, Kate DiCamillo has done an excellent job of creating realistic and engaging characters.
