Celebrate Black History Month With "Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters"
Friday February 10, 2006
"Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters" was written by Andrea Davis Pinkney. It's an excellent book for 9-12 year olds as well as young teens. Each of the ten biographies of women who made a difference in the fight for civil rights features a dramatic oil on canvas portrait by Stephen Alcorn that contains a number of allegorical images. "Let It Shine" is organized chronologically and covers the lives of ten women: Sojourner Truth, Biddy Mason, Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Ella Josephine Baker, Dorothy Irene Height, Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Shirley Chisholm. See my Top Picks of children's books about African American Freedom Fighters for information about others who made a difference.
