Spotlight on British Author Jacqueline Wilson
Tuesday May 16, 2006
There's an interesting interview with Jacqueline Wilson, Britain's Children's Laureate, on CBBC Newsround. Jacqueline Wilson, who has more than 70 children’s books of fiction in print, discusses Great Books To Read Aloud, her new book for parents, the importance of reading aloud, her role as Children's Laureate, and her books. Wilson's fiction deals with difficult subjects, such as mental illness, divorce, bullying, children in foster care, and dysfunctional families. Yet, it is enormously popular with 7-15 year olds, particularly 8-12 year old girls. I think that Wilson's first person narratives that so effectively capture the “voice” of the main character, her positive approach to problems, the humor in her books, and her realistic characters are among the reasons young people find her books so appealing. Have your children read any books by Jacqueline Wilson? What did they think of her books?
