The Pledge of Allegiance

Thursday July 13, 2006
Cover art of children's nonfiction book I Pledge Allegiance When your children say the Pledge of Allegiance, do they know what it means? Do they know how the Pledge came to be written in 1892, why children across the United States collected pennies to buy U.S. flags for their schools, how Columbus Day became a national holiday, who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance, and when and why the wording was changed several times? Do they know what The Youth's Companion magazine had to do with it all? I have to admit that I didn't have the answers to most of these questions until I read these children's books about the Pledge of Allegiance.
