On August 18, 1920, with its approval by the state of Tennessee, the nineteenth amendment finally achieved ratification by the required three-fourths of the states. On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was officially ratified, and women won the right to vote. Although I knew about Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and other nineteenth century suffragists, I knew nothing about the women who worked for final passage of the 19th Amendment in the 1900s. Consequently, I was pleased to learn about a children's nonfiction book on the subject. With Courage and Cloth: Winning the Fight for a Woman's Right to Vote, by Ann Bausum, focuses on the 1913-1920 time period. The author provides an overview that starts in 1848 and sets the historical context for what was to come in the early twentieth century. She then goes into detail about how women's right to vote was won. The book includes many historical photographs. I recommend it for 9-14 year olds.
