It's Teen Read Week: What is your teen reading?

Monday October 15, 2007
YALSA artworkWhen I visited with Paula Brehm-Heeger, the 2007-2008 President of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association, about teen reading trends, she mentioned the growing popularity of fantasy, as well as graphic novels and manga. Do your 'tweens or teens enjoy graphic novels? If so, what are some of their favorites? What other types of books do they enjoy? Click on "comments" below and share their recommendations. Thanks.

My daughter (18) had to read a graphic novel for summer reading before her freshman year of college, _Persepolis_. I was a bit skeptical but my daughter explained that it was just as challenging as any novel she had read previously for school and she had been in AP English during her senior year.
She is 19 now and O course, she and all of her friends read Harry Potter this summer, because this is the age group that started with _The Sorcerer’s Stone_ and has been just growing up with Harry Potter. She thinks that the depth of the seventh book was appropriate for the more mature reader. She is an English major in college now and thinks graphic novels are the way to go with teens today.

My son is reading Eragon. The first of the Dragon books. He actually is enjoying it. At 14 it was tough to tell what he would like. He is also into Manga, Naruto specifically. I think he likes the tie in from TV to what he is reading.

I think that some of the best books around are the older classics. I read first read Jane Austen at 12 and have been a devoted fan ever since but there are many newer books out there that are nearly as good. Soe of my fovourites are: Across the nightingale floor (and the others in the series), Malorie Balckman – Noughts and Crosses (and the others) Watership Down (ok, its not that new but its a fantastic read all the same!). At 15 i read a whole variety of book but i don’t think that teens ONLY enjoy graphic novel, they’re great but in moderation.

I think a really good book for young adults ( girls category ) would be the Anne of green gables series. I read them when i was 12 and loved them ! A few other recommendations would be:
Across the nightingale floor
Wuthering heights ( great storyline and plot ! )
The twilight series
Journey to the river sea.
hope that helps ! =)
