The Award, which has been given annually since 2006, recognizes the author(s) and illustrator(s) of outstanding beginning readers. It was named in honor of Theodor Seuss Geisel; his Dr. Seuss beginning readers have delighted children for generations. The 2008 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Medal winner is There Is a Bird on Your Head!, one of several Elephant & Piggie beginning readers by Mo Willems. The very talented Mo Willems is the author of a number of award-winning children's picture books, including Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
