Today Is Birth Date of Author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Thursday May 15, 2008
Author L. Frank Baum was born on May 15, 1856. His children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published in 1900. Since then, it has become a classic. According to L. Frank Baum, "...[The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ] aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out." The book is still full of hair raising adventures, but it is not as violent as the original Grimm's fairy tales. Have you and your children read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or any of Baum's other Oz books? What did you think of them? Click on "comments" below and share your opinions.

I have never read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but my dad and I read a lot of the Oz books when I was younger. I loved them. Also, I’ve seen the movie.

Many people confuse the Oz books with the movie and think they know all about Oz if they’ve seen the movie. But until you’ve read the books and experienced Baum’s humor and wordplay, you don’t really know about Oz. My favorite book is not “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” (although it is wonderful!), but “The Marvelous Land of Oz” is a delight to read as is “Queen Xixi of Ix,” one of Baum’s non-Dorothy fairy tales.
