Halloween Costumes Based on Children's Books
Thursday October 2, 2008
Sherri Osborn, the About.com Guide to Family Crafts, has a terrific photo gallery of Halloween costumes. The children's Halloween costume based on Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault, with illustrations by Lois Ehlert, is one of my favorites. There are also costumes based on Cinderella, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, among others. Have your children ever dressed up for Halloween as characters from children's books? If so, click on "Comments" below and tell me about it.

Oh, that Chicka Chicka Boom Boom costume is terrific! I’m so glad you posted this. I’m going to mine our books for costume ideas.
The Chicka Chicka Boom Boom costume looks fabulous!
When I was teaching first grade, I used to dress up as Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series. In the books, her goofy outfits always match the science topic of the book. I was an ocean Ms. Frizzle, with a fishy dress, rubber fish on my shoes, a fishy beach bag, etc. And, of course, I had a fabulous red wig.
I’m glad you like the costume. I think it’s darling. I love the idea of teachers dressing up for Halloween. Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series is a great choice. A middle school English teacher I know dresses up as the Cat in the Hat on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and her students love it.
Just wanted to point out that the link sent out in email to read more about the new children’s poet laureate leads to this article on Halloween costumes. Could that be remedied, please? I love to share with our younger library patrons information on a person named just to represent their interests in poetry.
Many thanks!

Joyce,
Thanks for pointing out the error in my weekly newsletter. Fortunately, although the “read more” link was incorrect, I had the right link for the title of the blog about the new Children’s Poet Laureate. You’ll find the blog entry at
