Teen Reading Trends: 2008-2009

Tuesday October 21, 2008
YALSA artworkWhat is your teen reading? How does it compare with what other teens are reading? In my discussion of Teen Reading Trends with the 2008-2008 president of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), Sarah Debraski, she mentioned the popularity of dark fantasy and chick lit, as well as graphic novels and manga. Does your teen read any of those? Let me know by clicking on "Comments" below and sharing some of your teenager's favorites. I'd also like to know the names of some of the books you liked best when you were a teen.

(1) Kathleen Mayotte says:

I have two teenage daughters and they LOVE the Twilight books. They read all four books twice. They read Nicholas Sparks books as well as Jodi Piccoult novels as well. They both loved Nick and Nora’s Infinate Playlist and loved it but did not like the movie. I guess you could say they read chick lit, but I’m okay with that becasue they are chicks and they read more then every other kid in their class. They are always reading something for pleasure.

I read the above post with interest because my teen daughter (14yr) also reads the Twilight series, as well as Jodi Picoult! They both must really be popular with the teen set. She did not read the other book mentioned in the previous post. My daughter did read a biography of Jim Morrison, of The Doors, but, as Billy Joel put it…It’s still rock-n-roll to me!

I am an English teacher and the Twilight series is by far the number one book flying off the shelves with others waiting in line for one to be returned. I read them and they are great!

(4) Julie says:

When I was a young teen in the early 80’s, I read what I guess know would be considered chick lit like Judith Krantz, The Thornbirds book etc but also really loved Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters books. Wuthering Heights, Pride & Predujice etc. were like the chick lit of the 1800’s. I bet all the girls who love Nicholas Sparks & Stephanie Myers would enjoy those books – and the movies & miniseries of Austin & Bronte books might whet their interest, too.

I am a teen and I read everything from Twilight to Jane Eyre to books by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche. I do read chick lit, but enjoy any good book, including books for adults.
