Katy and the Big Snow
Tuesday December 2, 2008
The children's picture book Katy and the Big Snow has delighted several generations of young children in our family. The story of Katy, a big red crawler tractor who saves the day when a huge snowstorm hits the city, was first published in 1943 and has become a classic. Virgina Lee Burton, the award-winning author and illustrator of Katy and the Big Snow, won the Caldecott Medal in 1942 for her picture book The Little House, one of my childhood favorites. Burton's Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel is another family favorite.

This is also one of our family favorites — we read it over and over again. Our copy is well worn, but those are always the books we cherish the most, aren’t they?
I’m so glad to see this classic is still available. It seems that many of our “tried and true” children’s books are out of print and thus, hard to find. As a former library media specialist, I liked to mix the old favorites with the new hits. Burton’s books are oldies but goodies.
I have never heard of this book before. Thanks for the suggestion. I was looking for “Tim and Kim” by Kay Linda Nord and found this book for some reason. Glad I did. While I am here, “Tim and Kim” is a great bilingual children’s book. I am looking for a copy as a christmas gift. Our kids love it. It is in both English and Spanish. Great little book. I found the author, finally, here if interested: http://kaylindanord.com/
Thanks again for this book. I will take a look at it for holiday gifts. I love giving books for presents!
