Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2008
Tuesday January 6, 2009
Take a look at my list of what I think are some of the best illustrated children's books of 2008 published in the U.S. The 10 books include We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, A is for Art: An Abstract Alphabet, Wabi Sabi, A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams, and Garmann's Summer, among others.
After you look at my choices, let me know which children's books you'd choose by clicking on "Comments" below and sharing your recommendations.

Your list looks great and I can’t wait to check these out. I am wondering if you DIDN’T include Selznick’s “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” because you don’t think of it as a picture book? The illustrations definitely support the story and, in many cases, TELL the story and, as one expects of Selznick, are marvellously detailed and realistic.
It came out at the tail end of 2008 but Out of the Nursery is my daughters favorite and the illustrations are really unique.
Junior,
I agree with you that Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret is wonderful. However, it was published in 2007. Selznick did win the 2008 Caldecott Medal for the book. Some were shocked because, at 500+ pages, it is not your typical picture book. However, the story is told in both words and pictures, which makes it an excellent choice.
