Children's books by
Roald Dahl have entertained generations of children. Dahl wrote nineteen children's books. His most popular books include
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,
The BFG,
Matilda and
James and the Giant Peach. Dahl's books, quirky and darkly humorous, might be described as modern fairy tales for 9-12 year old readers. How do your children feel about the children's books by Roald Dahl? Click on "Comments" below and share their, and your, opinions.

I’m helping 9-10 year olds who have slipped behind in their reading. Dahl is perfect – lots of humour – good morals and the illustrations enhance the stories.
Dahl is a great one. My younger soon fully enjoyed James and the Giant Peach. As a childrens author myself I know how much work and love goes into these books.
hello,am looking for Dahls biggest fans and vice versa,am writing my bachelor theses and need someof your opinions.I would be thankful if you write me back on my email:kristinaaj@centrum.sk.Thanx in advance
cool story and roald dahl is my favrte writer.
I loved Roald’s books when I was a child. Great author with a great imagination!
I cannot STAND Roald Dahl! His books are horrible. Matilda for instance. I only saw the movie, and the children were disrespectful to their parents, the principal was wicked, and of course Miss Honey’s parents died. The parents were horrible to their children also. The Witches. Illustrations sickening, concept evil and disgusting, and the parents in that book died too! The Twits. The main characters were awful people!!! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Agustus was gross, Mike rude, Beruca or whatever her name was, demanding and rude, the gum girl was rude, and Willy Wonka weird!
I don’t care how mean the parents are, children are to respect their elders, they are in authority! And children don’t need to have gluttony influenced upon them. They don’t need to watch TV all the time, or be demanding, or chew gum constantly!!! Or reading Roald Dahl. Read classics, like Little Women or Anne of Green Gables, or Huckleberry Finn, Treasure Island, and such! I mean, I’m only 12, and I know this! Stop reading such trash! I read very often, and I even preview books for two of my local librarians because they know that they can count on me to choose things that children will love and are appropriate for them. So preview books for your kids before they read them, PLEASE!!!!
I agree with you, Laura….
I do not like Roald Dahl either. He might have had a great imagination, but describing parents as such repulsive creatures as in Matilda…
I do not think it does good to a child to read that.
Imagine, if you start describing your parents like that, maybe because you had a bad day or you genuinely have a disadvantaged childhood…
Describing your parents that way hurts you deeply and does damage.

For heaven’s sake, kids – lighten up! A sense of humour will stand you in better stead than all this virtuous outrage. Generations of children have loved Roald Dahl’s wicked way with words. If you’re so humourless and dull at 12, what will you be like when you’re grown up?
I agree with Verne Maree – there’s no need to take it all so seriously. But even if you are inclined to do so – Dahl does not describe “your” parents, he describes parents of his fictitious characters, and some of them are kind and good, and others are very wicked indeed. His imagination is often so grotesque that it’s quite clearly cannot be true, and is not intended to be accepted as true. But for the grain of truth that is contained in every joke, it probably does not hurt to know that people come in all flavors – good and bad and wicked, and that includes adults.
