Favorite Mothers in Children's Books

Happy Mother's Day! Mother's Day made me think about some favorite mothers in children's books. When i started asking people their favorites, Ma in the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder was frequently mentioned. While the character of Ma is based on an actual person, there are also many wonderful fictional mother characters. Who are some of the mothers in children's books that you and your children like best? Click on "Comments" below and share your favorites.

I have to say - Ramona’s mom was pretty awesome. Not to mention the mom in SuperFudge - she handled a toddler who swallowed a turtle. Now, that’s a strong mom!
Happy Mother’s Day Liz - by the way.
I simply loved Mrs. Wallace in A Wrinkle in Time series. She was smart, strong and believed in her kids. I hope to be like her some day too!
Someone gave us the book “The Runaway Bunny”, by Margaret Wise Brown, when my baby was borne.
I like the patience, the determination and the imagination of the mother Bunny who would do anything for her baby bunny to stay with her.
I think the mama pig in the Olivia books is as fabulous as Olivia herself. She shows such grace under pressure!
A phenomenon that I’ve often noticed is the prevalence of orphans in children’s books, especially books for older children. I think children can have so many more adventures when they don’t have parents. My favorite mother in literature was Marmee from Little Women. She was much like my own mother in that she was gentle but firm and she loved to help the less fortunate.
Mre. Weasley in the Harry Potter books is my favorite… but my favorite mommy book is Where is Baby’s Mommy? That book was well loved in our home.
