Most of these also happen to be award winning authors. Beverly Cleary, for example, won the 1984 Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw; and Newbery honors for Ramona and Her Father (1978) and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (1982). Louis Sachar won the Newbery for Holes. Kate diCamillo for Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of Despereaux and several others; and Sharon Creech for Walk Two Moons and the Wanderer.

I would also add Madeline L’Engle, Avi, and Lloyd Alexander to this list.

I’ve found SmartBean to be a great site to view and buy award winning books, and not just winners of US awards like the Newbery or Caldecott, but also winners from the UK (Kate Greenaway & Carnegie), Canada & Australia.

Sometimes its not just favorite authors but wonderful stories. As the publisher of a new books series called The Undercover Kids’ Holland Adventures, I am always on the lookout for other wonderful adventures. I suggest Siobhan Bowd’s book, The London Eye Mystery
