The Artistry and Influence of Maurice Sendak
Thursday August 6, 2009
Maurice Sendak has had a major influence on the field of children's literature. The list of awards presented to him is too long to include in full. Sendak received the 1964 Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are and the Hans Christian Andersen International Medal in 1970 for his body of children's book illustration. He was the recipient of the American Book Award in 1982 for Outside Over There. In 1983, Maurice Sendak received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for his contributions to children's literature. Now that the movie version of Where the Wild Things Are is nearing completion, there is renewed interest in Maurice Sendak and his books. Do you and/or your children have a favorite Sendak book? I was never a Sendak follower but many years ago I had gone to a museum in PA where they gave out a wonderful poster that was designed by Sendak to promote an exhibition. I enjoyed the poster so much that I had it frames and it still hangs on my office wall.
Terrie,
How wonderful to have your own poster designed by Maurice Sendak – I love his work.
