Librarians Recommend Books for Boys

Thursday August 13, 2009

When I interviewed author Jon Scieszka, who is a tireless advocate on behalf of good books for boys and encouraging boys to read, he talked about the need to connect boys with appealing books and other reading material. Many boys who read on grade level are reluctant readers, not because they don't read well, but because they haven't found anything that they really want to read. Recently, I was delighted to find a number of online books for boys reading lists that were created by librarians. These lists include books for a wide range of ages and interests and are made up of books that librarians have found are very popular with boys. What kinds of books and other reading materials do your boys like? Share their favorites by clicking on "Comments" below and posting a message.

It’s so important to draw attention to reading, and attract reluctant readers to it,especially boys.

I grew up as a reluctant reader, in spite of the fact that my father published over 70 books. Now I write action-adventures & mysteries, especially for tween boys, that avid boy readers and girls enjoy just as much.

My blog, Books for Boys http://booksandboys.blogspot.com is dedicated to drawing attention to the importance of reading.

Keep up your good work.

As a retired elementary teacher and published author, I completely understand the need to engage those reluctant readers–especially boys. They love adventure, excitement, a little danger, and some humor. You might want to add my new book, ZIPPY, LOLLY AND SURFER DUDE, to your list.
