The American Girl 2013 Girl of the Year is Saige Copeland. Saige is nine years old and loves to paint and ride horses at her grandmother's ranch in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Saige uses her creativity to improve things when art classes are cut at her school due to budget cuts and other problems ensue. There are three 2013 Girl of the Year books: Saige and Saige Paints the Sky, both by Jessie Haas, and a nonfiction book Express Yourself: Use art to explore the emotions inside you! The picture book The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn, has been providing comfort and reassurance to children for a generation, so I was pleased to learn that, thanks to the publisher, Tanglewood Press, and the author, all 1,600 elementary school children in Newtown, are being given a copy of The Kissing Hand to provide comfort after the Sandy Hook tragedy. My Top 10 Illustrated Books of 2012 is still not finished. This year was a wonderful year for picture books, so I have a wealth of books to choose from, and I am having a hard time making my final selection. Hopefully, it will be up in the next week.
