Brian Selznick won a 2012 Schneider Family Book Award in recognition of his "artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences" in his portrayal of each of the main characters in the two stories, a boy and a girl, both of whom are deaf. See my review of Wonderstruck for more about the book, including why Selznick dedicated the book to Maurice Sendak, creator of the classic picture book Where the Wild Things Are, among others.
Wonderstruck is 600+ pages long and includes more than 450 of Selznick's dense pencil illustrations. It's number 1 on my personal list of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2011. (I'm now hard at work on my 2012 list.) If you and/or your kids have read Wonderstruck, please click on "Comments" below and let me know what you thought of it.
