If you are looking for a gripping wilderness survival tale for your 8-12 year old, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George is a good choice. The novel was first published in 1959 and in 1960, it was designated a Newbery Honor Book for excellence in young people's literature. The story about a 12-year-old boy, Sam Gribley, who leaves life in the city to live by himself in the mountains, is full of adventure. If your kids enjoy it, they'll be happy to know that George wrote four more books about the adventures of Sam Gribley and the falcon he finds and raises in the first book. Read the review of My Side of the Mountain to learn more. For more good books, both fiction and nonfiction, see Video Book Talks: Middle Grade Books.
