Celebrate Black History Month with children's books. Ten women who made a difference in the fight for civil rights are featured in Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters
, which was written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Stephen Alcorn. It's an excellent book for 9-12 year olds, as well as young teens. Each of the biographies features a dramatic oil on canvas portrait that contains a number of allegorical images. See my African American Freedom Fighters reading list
for information about others who made a difference. For additional recommendations, see my February Calendar of Children's Books
. Are there books about African American history that your kids particularly like? Click on "Comments" below and share their recommendations.
