Harry the Dirty Dog and More

Harry the Dirty Dog cover artI was amazed to learn that Harry the Dirty Dog was first published more than 55 years ago. Who knew? I can see why it's remained popular. Children relate to Harry and his desire to avoid taking a bath. They enjoy his antics as he escapes and gets so dirty that he is unrecognizable. They watch and listen (or read) with bated breath to see what he's going to do to convince his family he's their dog.

One of the nice things about Harry the Dirty Dog and the other books about Harry is that while young children will love to have you read the books to them, beginning readers will enjoy reading the books on their own. Children who enjoy the books will probably also enjoy the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems and Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman, which also work as a read aloud and a read alone. If dogs are a favorite, I particularly recommend Norman Bridwell's Clifford Collection, which celebrates 50 years of Clifford the Big Red Dog.
