More About the Berenstain Bears Children's Books

An Interview With Jan and Mike Berenstain

By , About.com Guide

Q. Do you have a favorite Berenstain Bears book? If so, what is it and why is it your favorite?
A. Our favorite is The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers. We get more feedback about this book from our fans than any other. People appreciate the fact that this book gives them a reassuring non-threatening way to educate their children about stranger-danger.

Q. Mike, do you still do children's books on your own as well as in collaboration with your mother?
A. I started collaborating with my parents in the late 1980's and by 1990 I was working on the Berenstain Bears books full-time with them. I don't do children's books other than the Berenstain Bears, now--I just don't have time--people want more bear books!

Q. Why do you think the Berenstain Bears books have remained so popular?
A. We have always thought it was due to the fact that the books have appealing characters in a family setting that everyone can identify with, that they deal with everyday subjects in a helpful way, that the stories are funny and that the illustrations are rich and interesting.

What's Next for the Berenstain Bears?

Q. Are there other things that you would like people to know about Stan and Jan Berenstain, Mike Berenstain, and the Berenstain Bears?
A. Our book The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Commercials has just come out. Several others are coming out, soon: The Berenstain Bears' New Kitten, The Berenstain Bears and the Big Spelling Bee, The Berenstain Bears Trim the Tree and The Berenstain Bears Lose a Friend.

In addition, the Berenstain Bears have just begun their role as Prevent Child Abuse America's Official Spokesbears. We will be working closely with this organization to help in their effort to provide educational services to prevent child abuse.
