The first Theodor Seuss Geisel Award for excellence in beginning reader books was awarded in 2006. In addition to the Geisel Medal winner, four childrens beginning readers were designated Honor Books.
The 2006 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Winner
Author Cynthia Rylant and illustrator Suçie Stevenson were awarded the 2006 Theodor Seuss Geisel Medal for their beginning reader book
Henry and Mudge and the Great Grandpas, which was published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers.
In four simple and joyful chapters, Henry and his sweet-natured dog enjoy a memorable visit with great-grandpa Bill and his buddies at the grandpa house. The full and happy day is highlighted by a frolic in the pond, with grandpas in their skivvies, topped off by a spaghetti dinner. (January 23, 2006 ALA media release)
