In addition to the 2009 Coretta Scott King Book Author Award winner and the 2009 Coretta Scott King Book Illustrator Award winner, a total of six books were designated 2009 Honor Books. The winner of the 2009 John Steptoe New Talent Award was also announced.
The purpose of the
Coretta Scott King Book Awards for authors and illustrators is to "encourage the artistic expression of the African American experience via literature and the graphic arts, including biographical, historical and social history treatments by African American authors and illustrators. (
