In order to be eligible for the annual Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards, a book for children or young adults must have been published in the United States. The writer and illustrator may be a citizen of any country. The book must have been published between June of the previous year and May of the year in which the Awards are selected.
An independent panel of three judges, annually appointed by the Editor of the Horn Book, selects the winners. A cash prize and an engraved silver bowl are awarded to each of the category winners. An engraved silver plate is awarded to each of the Honor Book recipients.
The Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards were first awarded in 1967 and have been awarded annually ever since. The Awards are a joint project of the Boston Globe newspaper and The Horn Book, Inc., which is known for its publications about books for children and young adults: The Horn Book Magazine and The Horn Book Guide.
