The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

Title:The Curious Garden

Author: Peter Brown

Illustrator: Peter Brown

Story: Despite the fact that the city is dark and dreary and most people stay inside, one boy, Liam, likes going outside and exploring the city. His life, and the city, changes when he discovers several wildflowers and plants on an abandoned elevated railroad track. Over time, as Liam cares for them, the city, once gray and brown, becomes covered with green grass, trees, flowers and vines and attracts new gardeners to come out and enjoy the city.

Illustrations: Peter Brown’s artwork, rendered in acrylic and gouache on board, takes the story of Liam to the level of joyful fantasy. When the story begins, the city is dark and dreary. As Liam begins to care for the wildflowers and other plants, they grow and spread to the point that the city becomes totally covered with fanciful gardens, from rooftop gardens and giant topiaries to grass-covered stairways. While the illustrations are beyond reality, the basic concept is not, as witness New York City’s High Line public park built on an abandoned elevated railroad track.
