"TD Canadian Children's Book Week is the single most important national event celebrating Canadian children's books and the importance of reading." (Source: Official Book Week Site) TD Bank Financial Group is the title sponsor, which is why the event's official title is TD Canadian Children's Book Week.
Book Week events take place in every province and territory across Canada, hosted by schools, public libraries, bookstores and community centers. Authors, illustrators and storytellers tour the country during Book Week and share Canadian children's books.According to the online fact sheet, "The theme for TD Canadian Children's Book Week 2012 is Read a Book, Share a Story and will celebrate the importance of sharing stories. 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Lillian H. Smith becoming the first trained children’s librarian in the British Empire. Our Book Week theme highlights the important role that librarians play in sharing books and creating lifelong readers." To me, the most impressive thing about TD Canadian Children's Book Week is the TD Grade One Book Giveaway Program. Through this program, every first grader in Canada receives the gift of a free book, in either English or French. Every year, more than 500,000 free books are distributed.
