In one of the popular children's books by Beverly Cleary, Ramona Quimby, Age 8, Ramona's class celebrates National D.E.A.R. Day.
- "She [Beverly Cleary] included a passage about the DEAR program in Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (pages 40-41) after she received numerous letters from readers who mentioned the great reading program they were doing in class. It seemed like something Ramonas class would do, too, so she put it in the book." (D.E.A.R. Web site)
While many schools, libraries and bookstores celebrate National D.E.A.R. Day on April 12, you don't need an official celebration to enjoy the day. You can have your own celebration by starting a daily habit of reading aloud to your young children and reading together with your older children and teens.
