Hi-Lo Book: The Definition

Definition: hi-lo book The term "hi-lo book" refers to books that are at the reader's interest level (“hi” stands for “high interest”) but written at a lower reading level (“lo” stands for “low readability”) to encourage reading. Kids and teens reading below grade level are more apt to want to read a book if it is not only at their reading level but also at their interest level.
Also Known As: high interest/low readability book, high-low book
Alternate Spellings: hi/lo books, high-low books, high/low books
Examples:
Tweens and teens who read below grade level are often reluctant readers because they have never found books that they can read that are also about things that interest them - in other words, hi-lo books.
