Question: When and What is Children’s Book Week?
Answer:

When is Children's Book Week?

Children’s Book Week, an annual event that began in 1919, used to be celebrated the week before Thanksgiving. However, in 2008 the celebration of Children's Book Week was moved to May. Children's Book Week dates for 2009-1012 are May 11-17, 2009; May 10-16, 2010; May 2-8, 2011; and May 7-13, 2012.

Who Administers Children's Book Week?

In 1944, the Children's Book Council (CBC) was established, and it administered the celebration until 2008. At that time, Every Child a Reader, the philanthropic arm of the Children's Book Council, took over responsibility for Children's Book Week.

When happens during Children's Book Week?

During Children’s Book Week, public libraries, school libraries, and bookstores generally have special activities for children that are designed to encourage a love of books.

According to the Children’s Book Council,

"A celebration of the written word, Children's Book Week introduces young people to new authors and ideas in schools, libraries, homes and bookstores. Through Children's Book Week, the Children's Book Council encourages young people and their caregivers to discover the complexity of the world beyond their own experience through books."
